We were asked by a commission appointed by the President Hugo Banzer of Bolivia to identify cause of difficulties, evaluate the prognosis for completion , and make recommendations for changes to improve excavation performance, for the Misicuni tunnel in the high Bolivian Andes.

Earlier we had recommended one of our colleagues, Antony Ivan-Smith to serve as the tunnel superintendent.  After years of standstill, Mr. Ivan-Smith managed to accomplish in 2 months what had taken 2 years before his arrival.  He succeeded in advancing the tunnel at record excavation rates (up to 845 m/month) in adverse geological, physical, and logistical conditions.

Congratulations Antony for the light at the end of the tunnel !!!!!!
